After living and working in Maryland, in the United States, for more than two decades, I made my own move to Portugal. I understand the excitement of starting a new chapter—and the questions that arise when choosing where to live.
A beautiful photograph can draw you to a property. Before deciding, though, it helps to explore the neighborhood and imagine your daily life there.
Start with your daily routine
Before searching for properties, consider what you need to feel at home. Do you work remotely? Do you prefer walking or driving? Would you like to be close to the beach, schools, public transportation, or a lively city center?
Your answers can help narrow down locations and guide your search. Beyond fitting your budget, the location should work for your everyday life.
Explore the neighborhood beyond the viewing
Whenever possible, visit the area at different times of day. Walk through the streets, observe the surroundings, and try the routes you would regularly take.
Where would you shop for groceries? How long would your commute take? Are public transportation and essential services nearby?
Understanding these details can help you make a more confident decision.
Look closely at the property
My more than 20 years of experience in real estate, construction, and property management have taught me to notice details that photographs and property descriptions may not reveal.
Pay attention to natural light, ventilation, signs of dampness, the condition of windows, and maintenance needs. If you plan to renovate, seek a professional assessment and cost estimates before making a commitment.
A property with potential deserves a careful review of the work and investment required.
Define the purpose of your purchase
A home to live in and an investment property may require different criteria.
For your own home, consider comfort and your daily routine. For an investment, also assess local demand, ongoing expenses, and property management needs.
Having a clear goal makes it easier to compare your options.
Explore your possibilities in Portugal
When moving to a new country, it can take time to discover the area that feels right for you. Exploring alternatives and asking questions are part of that process.
My focus is Barreiro and the South Bank of Lisbon. I also collaborate with colleagues from the Kaya Team, eXp Portugal, in other regions of the country.
If you are planning a move to Portugal, we can discuss your lifestyle, budget, and priorities. From there, I can help you identify areas and properties to visit, with personal support in English or Portuguese.
